Our new member

God has sent us our new family member on 11 Feb 2010. She was born in the morning, within one hour after her mother arrived at the hospital! Thanks God the labour process was short and the doctor was ready at the labour room just-in-time.

Still our new member's name is not yet determined. The father and mother are still thinking of the best name for her.

It's already September now and Tin Tin has started school since mid August. He is doing fine except that it is difficult for him to get up in the morning for school.

We and Gary's family went to Space Museum via ferry yesterday. This is the second time Tintin took ferry and the first time he visited Space Museum. He was fear about the dark environment in Space Museum and he could only bear the exhibit hall on ground floor.

Tintin tried the star ferry last Thursday and had his second ride yesterday. We discussed with him and showed him the ferry the day before his first ride. We chose the shortest route -- Central to TST.
Although he was a bit worried but he was brave enough to try with his arms holding close to his mum like a koala. The second ride was much better and he even stepped over the door when leaving the ferry.

I have not read comic for more than ten years and I borrowed this comic from the library of Heep Hong Centre where Tintin is now attending training during weekdays.

This comic is about the growth of an autistic boy "光" living in Tokyo. I just read book one (from birth to end of kindergarten) and I was touched and had similar feelings as 光's mother.

Tintin was born on the same day three years ago. Thanks God for giving our family this "asset" and we have been adding many values to this "asset" and already got dividends including happiness and love.

Tintin recently loves MTR and trains very much. Each time he see a MTR train in TV he laughs and he nods his head when we ask him if he wants to take MTR or not.

I myself quite enjoy the latest TV adv by MTR, which reminds my old days (especially when the girl in the adv walked in front of a slide showing the entrance of CU).

I don't remember when I first took the MTR but the first ride should be from Shek Kip Mei to Kwun Tong as my mum has a friend in Kwun Tong and we visited her quite often these days.

I was a Hong Kong Island voter in 2004 LegCo election and I was sorry that Ho Sui Lan lost the seat. I intend to help her this coming election but she doesn't sit for the election.

Some weeks ago I found that I was regarded as a ShamShuiPo voter instead when I received the District Council election notice. I was puzzled why I was put in a different region on District Council election until today I checked with the Election Dept that they had used the correspondence address (my mum's home) reported when I renewed my ID card in 2005.

So sorry that I can't elect for Hong Kong Island LegCo election this coming Sunday. I did remember the atmosphere in 2003 and 2004, when the city was in so bad condition and those really ugly faces….

Tintin was bitten by insect the night before and his face is swollen. This morning, his left eye lid is swollen as well and he can only open half his left eye.

Tomorrow he will go to Ling Leung Tong Kindergarten for interview and I really hope that God can heal Tintin's face today!

Tintin has improvement in speaking in recent weeks. He started pronouncing "車" when he sees bus, taxi etc which are his favourites. Then he said "姨姨" when we requested and "葉葉" when he sees the leafs in garden.

Some weeks ago he started to pronounce "門" when we finished a hymn during Sunday service in church. Yesterday he could say "阿門" together. Thanks to our Lord.

Yet he only says "媽媽" when he is frightened, like when we were on board of 忠僕號 two weeks ago.

May God teach Tintin how to praise Him by songs in the near future!

I attended a conference on autism a week ago and I was told the suspected impact of heavy metal accumulated in our children. The doctors expressed concerns on the polluted air and fishes around us and recommend us not to give our children fish especially those from fresh water.

I read a newspaper article in Ming Pao with similar issue today:-

Next Move

With the collection of thoughts from brothers & sisters and some other friends, and after visiting the special nursery at the end of June, Tai and I decided that Tintin should join the training program of the special nursery to be started in mid-August.

Meanwhile, we thanks God that we have come to a solution which solves many of our current issues:-
- too tired for Tai and I travel to and from Kln and HK Island during weekdays to visit Tintin
- too little time to play with Tintin during our stay in my mum's home after dinner during weekdays
- long and difficult travelling for Tintin to special nursery from existing living places
- not enough sleeping time for Tintin as the special nursery starts at 9 a.m. Mon-Fri

Finally, we made a very quick decision and rented a flat in Park Avenue (Olympic City) which is only one footbridge next to the special nursery.

Tai and I will move to the flat in early Aug 07 and Tintin will join us when he starts his special training program.

As I have enrolled for a normal pre-nursery for Tintin and paid the Aug 07 fee, Tintin will attend this pre-nursery on Mon,Wed and Fri afternoon in addition to the special training program in the morning next month. I hope he can cope with them and if it is ok, we may keep this arrangement as I guess some time in the near future Tintin can be discharged from the special training program (I heard from one mum whose son attending the special training program early this year that he can be discharged and will start normal pre-nursery).

Tintin has participated certain playgroups which are designed specifically for autistic children since March. He is also being trained by occupational therapist and a private toddler teacher every week.

Tintin has shown some improvements over the months and he now has more responses to people around him. However he is yet to start speaking in our language (with baby talks sometimes) and so his current status is still behind normal children of the same age (around half-year behind according to his teacher).

Since his application to Victoria Pre-nursery failed we have found another one - Yew Chung for him. Yew Chung provides a three-day program which Tai and I consider it suitable for Tintin as he may not like staying in school so often. Yew Chung's class also has a smaller children to teacher ratio which may help Tintin.

On the other hand we have been waiting for a seat in special day care centre for Tintin in both government subsidised centres and semi-private centres. Early this year when Tintin received his assessment we took the doctor's recommendation that Tintin should attend special nursery. However, I noticed recently that it seems Tintin learnt some bad behaviours from his classmates in the special playgroups (like pushing children). As such I am more inclined to have Tintin attending normal nursery with support from one-to-one special treatments as I don't want him to copy bad behaviours or silly things from his classmates who might be worsen than him in special nursery.

Today, I receive a call from the special centre telling me that there is a place for Tintin to attend special pre-nursery in coming August. I turned the officer down as I mentioned my comment to her and I said Tintin has demonstrated some improvements. She is so kind and suggests that she would talk to the teacher in the special playgroup that Tintin is attending to see if the teacher consider there is a real need for Tintin to attend special nursery and will waive our application if the teacher consider Tintin is ok. The officer left me a message afterwards and she said Tintin's teacher opined that Tintin should attend special nursery. I did not have chance to ring her back up to now and it really ruins my plan. Should Tintin goes to special nursery OR should him be given a chance to normal school ??

Tintin became two years old last weekend and we held a mini party for him in Tai's music centre. The young participants were very happy and I hope the adults were happy too!

May God bless Tintin's way in the years to come and guide Tai and me how to teach Tintin.

Uncles, aunties, sisters and brothers,

It is already the 9th day of The year of Boar, we would like to wish you all happy, healthy, peaceful and fruitful this year.

These are pictures we took last week (1st day of The year of Boar). Tintin got a lot red pockets from uncles and aunties. Of course I will be the custodian as a mum and may seek investment opportunities on his pocket monies.

I would like say sorry to those uncles and aunties who were refused by Tintin when you gave him the red pockets ( he did not take them or even pushed the red pockets out of his sight). Hope he can greet you all next Lunar New Year la.

Further to the assessment on Tintin's situation, we have met the social worker and have applied for special nursery provided by Heep Hong Society. According to the social worker Tintin may need to wait for a year to get a seat. As such, the problem is where to get immediate assistance.

Thanks for many sisters and brothers in church and some friends of Tai, we now understand more about the services being provided by private practices and non-governmental organisations.

I came across Heep Hong's web site yesterday and found a play group which is for 2-3 years old autistic childen at a centre near my mum's home. Thanks God there are seats available and I have enrolled it for Tintin and he will start it next month.

Meanwhile I am still collecting information and will need to seek treatments for Tintin as all advisers told us that it is important to start treatments as early as possible. I would say it is a bit difficult to sort out all options and seek the right one but we will see what we can do.

We have talked to a friend of Tai this afternoon who is a teacher in special school and a christian. She told me a story: When God decides to send babies which are of some forms of problems to families He ask the angels to choose. The angels choose carefully and select families which are able to provide the babies with love and assistance. Therefore it is not due to sins or anything wrong about a family having special children but it is the angels' belief that the family can deal with them.

This is a great assignment for me and Tai and we will try our best to handle it.

Autism

Tintin saw a doctor this morning. I was not there but according to Tai in the doctor's opinion, Tintin has demonstrated a tendency/ may already has autism (自閉). I was not surprised about this but Tai said the doctor recommend Tintin to attend special school for training at an early stage. This means that he will not go to normal nursery.

I have not got all the details (will discuss with Tai tonight). I am not very worried about this but I thought I may need to spend more time and pay more attention to Tintin. Should I quit my job and bring Tintin up full-time? What should I do to help him? It is still too early to determine but let God lead my way.

I attach a photo of Tintin taken recently when he watched Barney video. He did not like Barney before but become crazy with Barney video these two months. What he listened "when you happy and you know it" Tintin would be very happy and he raised his hands like those children in the video.

Having medicine

Tintin used to love medicines. From time to time when he caught a cold he was given medicine with fruity favor and for fever the medicine is in strawberry favor which he really loves. As such he had no problem with taking medicines in the past (see attached photo).

However, since the end of November when he was found to have ear infection and was given antibiotics, he started to taste the strong bitterness and became crazy when he took the medicine. He then resisted any other medicines being put into his mouth (even some are fruity favoured). Unfortunately his infection is not reccovered up to date and caught flu on top of it last week. Last Saturday Tai and I fed Tintin the medicine with great effort and having a bottle of milk ready to please him after the dose.

Tintin was crazy after the dose and when he was given the milk, he held it and refused to drink it. It is the first time I saw him refusing milk when he needs it daily before sleep.

This is the third week he is taking antibiotics and the process is really a big battle for us. Tintin will see the doctor again tomorrow and hopefully he can finish his journey with antibiotics then.

Just click on Dennis Luk's blog and his photo album, finding some photos taken in July 2003 during a Group Hope gathering. There is a photo of Ip Kar and C T. Their looks were so different from today's! Dennis had no gray hair at that time!

Tintin's third lesson

Tintin did a little bit better in his third lesson. He tried the first song during singing lesson but failed to keep his temper during the second song. As usual, he did not respond to people's request. When his teacher talk to him, the most he would do was giving his teacher a glance. Tea time is still his best performed group activity.

Tintin first schoolday

Tintin had his first experience as a student last Saturday (12/8). He was a bit shy at the beginning and frightened during group activities such as story telling and singing. He did not have much cookies at tea time but drank a lot apple juice (from concentrate, unfortunately).

triplets

A news today : There is a couple (husband 29, wife 26) who have triplets of 10 months old. The wife run away for a week, leaving the husband and triplets at home. The husband was in despair and threatened to kill the triplets and himself if his wife won't turn up.

I can image how terrible it will be taking care of 3 babies at one time at home. The couple really needs help.

As the government is pomoting a family to have 3 children, special bonus and attentions should be given to this poor couple. Don't know what Donald Tsang will react on this news (if he has the chance to see it).
